CB2 – Child-Robot with Biometric Body

I recall, close to 20 years ago, visiting the science museum in Atlanta.  At that time, they had an exhibit of Japanese robotics on display and I was able to take home a piece of calligraphy drawn by a robotic arm using a traditional brush and inkstone.  At the time, it was an amazing feat of engineering to witness.

Today, these developments have continued to the point of developing ever more realistic humanoid robots in an effort to mimic humanity.  In this case, to mimic a young child.  Outside of AI, I’ve never really considered robotic children.  But, it may require some consideration along three lines.

1.  Conservation of space and resources may result in smaller robotic designs.  If you don’t need a 6 foot robot, why build one?  With the correct engineering, a smaller robot could easily contain the resources for working any number of jobs.  And any robot which can walk can use a stepstool or ladder.

2.  There may be individuals who could benefit from having a more “childlike” robot available to them.  Individuals recovering from the loss of a loved one, or even someone who would like the interact with a more childlike personality over that of an “adult” robot.

3.  Pedophiles who may use child-bots to pursue their illness, whether to further it in a “safe” method or a a psychological tool for attempting to control their impulses.

Somehow #3 seems like a lot of fun for a bad story.  Let’s try one:

Peterson watched the Childbot 2200 strut across the room.  It was wearing a yellow polo shirt and jeans and looking entirely too lifelike for his satisfaction.  The face was too real for him, resulting in a constant drive to stroke the smooth cheeks and run his fingers through the long, blond hair.

The ‘bot stopped and turned towards him.  “Gary, you have been focused on my person for over ten seconds.  This is the third warning today.  If you do this once more, I will be required to use shock response to assist you to avoid these actions.”

Peterson turned away, his lip curling downward.  Without thinking, he glances down at his hand, still a bit numb from where he touched the boy…no, bot…earlier in the morning.  The shock had lit him up, causing the numbness to reach his elbow.

A quick glance over, He is attractive, but that is one scary kid…
